Free credit reports and negative history?

White Sox Fan asked:

I had applied for a small loan and after receiving the reasons for its denial I noticed two reasons were something to the effect of “Delinquincy, public record, nonpayment”, or something similar. This alarmed me so I went to the official free credit report site and checked my history. The report I received on this site(through Equifax) did not indicate ANY negative history so I was confused as to why the bank’s credit check would.

I have several tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to student loans for law school but those don’t have to be paid back until after I graduate in 2009. My other credit history is small and I know I never missed any payments on any of my bills.

The only things I think it could be are either tickets/criminal history or overdrafting an account(which I’ve done once or twice). Would these qualify for the description the bank gave me? Why didn’t these things show on the free report? Sorry for the length but I wanted to be accurate.
A few additional details in light of the first answer. I should say that the main reason I was told I was refused was because of 1)a lack of credit history and 2)no paying job. The lack of credit history means I did not have any previous lines of credits with debt payable to a financial institution. My internship is for a government position(prosecutor) and is unpaid. Also any overdraft was immediately corrected.

I didn’t see any of the three reporting agencies on the letter but I’m sure I can give the bank a call and find out. I did receive my free report from the official site so hopefully I can still get additional ones from the other two agencies. Still does anyone have any ideas what these negatives could potentially be?

How To Obtain A Free Credit Report

Carrie Reeder asked:

Ready to apply for a mortgage loan? Thinking about getting a new credit card? Before you do, you may want to review a copy of your credit report to ensure that all your information is accurate. And, fortunately, there are quite a few ways to obtain a free copy of your credit report. Here’s how:

Make a phone call

There are three major credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. They are legally required to provide you with a copy of your credit report–for free!–once a year. And obtaining your report can be as simple as making a phone call! Just do an Internet search to find the phone numbers of the three credit reporting bureaus, and call each one individually. In most cases you’ll give your information to an automated voice mail service, and in no time at all your reports will be delivered to your mailbox.

Write a letter

Don’t trust the automated voice mail system? Need your request in writing for paperwork reasons? When you search online for the three credit bureaus’ information, look for a snail mail address. In most cases, you can simply send a letter that includes all your basic information–name, address, social security number, phone number and previous addresses. Ask for a copy of your credit report. Although this process takes a little longer than a phone call–because you have to wait for the postal service–you should still have your credit reports in a relatively short amount of time.

Go online!

The quickest and easiest way to get your free credit report is to go online. You can either access your reports directly through the credit reporting bureau, or you can find a website that consolidates these reports into one. Either way, you’ll get your information instantly–no waiting! You can print out your report so that you can review it at your leisure.

No matter which method you choose for obtaining your credit report, remember: it should be free once a year. However, you may have to pay a small fee if you want your credit score, too.

Don’t Fall Prey to the Free Credit Report Lure

Ludwig E. Parker asked:

The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act has been amended, requiring each of the national consumer reporting companies, to provide you  with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once a year. TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax are the three companies required to do so. Don’t pay for your credit report, or get lured into joining a paid program, when you can get it free. Freeannualcreditreport.com is the only website used by the three credit reporting agencies. Beware of so called free reports.  This is the only FTC recognised source. Take advantage of the website in order to submit the proper forms, or, if you prefer, the process can be expedited over the telephone, or by the U.S. postal service.

The FTC has received many complaints about companies offering free credit reports. Thousands of people were lured by deceptive marketing into paying for services related to obtaining a free credit report. These people were offered a free report, only to be enroled in paid programs which were difficult to remove oneself from. These manipulative practices put people with bad credit at even greater risk for financial trouble. If you ordered a credit report between November 1, 2000 and September 15, 2003 you may be entitled to participate in the FTC settlement. More information can be found at MyCreditBusiness

Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies individually, they are only providing free annual credit reports through one outlet. Contacting them directly will only get you redirected to the combined contact resource. There is a required form to fill out in order to request your free credit report. Do not use forms found on websites other than freeannualcreditreport.com. These forms will most likely result in you being enrolled in a “free trial” program, which will cost you money in the long run. Be sure to steer clear of these dubious offers.

You will need your name, address, SS#, and birth date, plus you will be asked to answer a question only you would know the answer to  (for security purposes). In the past, people were not entitled to view their credit information,  they had to pay, or qualify based on certain activity within the credit report. Today the nationwide free annual credit report is mandated by the FTC.  Don’t miss out on the chance to see what is in your credit report, and head off any trouble before it can effect your financial future.

How to Get Free Credit Reports in the Us, UK or Australia

Tristan Dunston asked:

Consumers in the US, UK and Australia can all get their hands on a free copy of their credit report to do a credit check on themselves. The systems in each country are different, and this article explains how consumers can go about getting a free credit report if they live in one of these countries.

In the United States:

Consumers have had the legal right to a free copy of their credit report, annually, for a number of years now. The Fair Credit Reporting Act granted consumers a free credit report from each of the three US credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and Transunion.

There is only one authorised website in the US from which American consumers can obtain their free report under their legal entitlement, and that is annualcreditreport.com. There is also a free toll number, 1-877-322-8228 where US citizen’s can order their annual credit report. A report can also be ordered by filling out the Annual Credit Report Request Form and posting it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Online, the service is instant, but security questions will be asked to verify identity. By telephone and post, it takes about 15 days for a credit report to arrive, but it may take longer if the agency needs to verify an identity.

The Federal Trade Commission, which protects US consumers, has warned people to be on the look out for what it calls ‘imposter’ sites. At one point it was estimated there were more than one hundred such websites in existence, some of which included domains that used misspellings of the authorised free credit report website.

There are other online services offering free credit reports, using subscription free trial period schemes. With these credit report services consumers need to be aware that if they fail to cancel the subscription within the free trial period they are likely to have their plastic charged. The trial period schemes usually require consumers to cancel the subscription within the trial period, usually 30 days, or the company may start to charge a fee.

Also, in the United States, consumers can get a free credit report if they have been turned down for credit, insurance or employment and they apply within 60 days of receiving notice from the company involved. The unemployed who are looking for work, those on welfare and people whose reports are inaccurate, because of fraud, can all get a free credit check.

In the UK:

There is not a legal right for consumers to a free credit report from the credit reference agencies in the UK, unlike the US. But you can go directly to the websites of the three credit reference agencies, Callcredit, Equifax and Experian to get one without having to pay a fee. All offer a free trial subscription service that provides a free credit report as part of the free trial. To avoid incurring a charge, the consumer must remember to cancel the subscription with the credit reference agency within the free trial period, usually 30 days. Failure to do so may lead to the agency charging fees.

One website in the UK, annualcreditreport.co.uk, provides UK consumers with free yearly access to their credit report from one of the three credit reference agencies. This service doesn’t require people to provide their credit card details to get a free credit report.

While there is not a legal right for consumers to a free credit report in the UK, there is a right under Data Protection laws for consumers to get a credit report for £2. This is known as a statutory credit report. A statutory credit report can be obtained by writing to the credit reference agencies and sending a cheque or postal order for £2, with details such as name, full current and previous address, and date of birth to: Callcredit Ltd Consumer Services Team, PO Box 491, Leeds LS3 1WZ; Experian Ltd Consumer Help Service, PO Box 8000, Nottingham NG80 7WF and Equifax Credit Report Advice Centre PO Box 1140 Bradford BD1 5US. It usually takes around 7 days for a statutory credit report to arrive.

In Australia:

Australian consumers have a right to a free copy of their credit report under the Privacy Act. Veda Advantage and Dun and Bradstreet, Australia’s largest credit reporting agencies, will both provide a free credit report to consumers within 10 days of receiving a request. The Tasmanian Collection Service, which covers the citizens of Tasmania, provides consumers with a free credit report if they have been refused credit or an application is to do with the management of an individual’s credit commitments.

Australian consumers keen to keep an eye on their credit rating can get a free copy of their credit report by writing to: Veda Advantage Public Access, PO Box 964, North Sydney NSW 2059. Dun and Bradstreet at Public Access Centre, Dun and Bradstreet (Australia) PL, PO box 7405, St Kilda Road, VIC 3004. Tasmanian Collection Service can be contacted at GPO Box 814H, Hobart, TAS 7001.

How to get free credit report to raise credit score?

Gen Wright asked:

e most essential things that you should work on is your credit score. It cannot be avoided though that sometimes we encounter problems with credit rating because of some situations we just cannot avoid. Thus, you have to look for ways on how you can raise credit score as fast as you can in order to save yourself from any further financial inconveniences. You can find many ways in order to resolve your problem regarding bad credit rating.

Here are a few foolproof ways to improve your credit scores that most people have found very useful:

1. Grab a copy of your own free annual Credit Report. You can get this free if you know where to look for it. Looking into your credit report can help you check for any inconsistency. Do you know how to get free credit report? The best agencies to get these reports for free are Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

2. Study your credit report carefully. For all you know, you are having a bad credit rating because somebody in the credit bureaus made a mistake. For this reason, we should consider the possibility of credit bureaus committing mistakes when giving credit ratings to individuals. To make sure this is not going to happen to you, you need to analyze and check your credit reports well. Three bureaus that give these credit ratings are: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian.

3. Pay bills on or before the due date. This may sound too simple but this is actually the main reason on why bad credit scores are into existence. So if you aim to get a good credit rating, always try to make sure you pay your bills on time.

4. Never attempt to close your old accounts. Although some people would advice you to close previous accounts, it does not help in raising your credit score. Some say you should close it because it will increase your credit rating, while there are others who say we can increase it by keeping old accounts. The truth of the matter is, when you keep your old account, you have bigger credit available whereas if you close it, it will lower your credit and it will decrease your credit capacity.

If you want to get a good credit rating, you need to handle finances well. It is very important that you watch out for any activity that may cause your credit rating to go down. If at this time you are already having some issues with your finances then now would be a good time to start following these guidelines. This has always worked for a lot of people so it will certainly work on you, too.

And remember ? the first step on the way of new financial freedom is to get free annual credit report as soon as possible. Get one and review it again and again. If you are not sure of what to do, ask people. Ask a friend, a family member or someone who knows about credit reports. And in case there is something strange or unknown ask professionals. Do not allow lenders to reject your application any more. Do not be content with paying high bank fees. Take action to raise credit score immediately.

Many Places To Get Your Free Credit Report

Andy Zain asked:

Free credit reports are so easy to obtain. They can be accessed online at numerous websites, or they are available by calling or requesting by mail. People need access to their credit reports all of the time, and these companies provide a great service.

To apply online for a free credit report, several pieces of information are needed. They will, of course, need a name and address. They will want more confidential information like social security number. They also need security questions answered like former addresses and telephone numbers to verify your identity.

There are so many different websites who offer free credit reports. The free credit report is offered through a free trial membership. They may offer 30-days of a free trial where the person can view their credit report and get their credit score. However, a credit card number will be needed because they in turn hope you choose to continue service with them. They will charge your card at the end of the trial if it is not cancelled. It is recommended to cancel this free trial before it expires to avoid charges.

The free credit report will include information from three credit bureaus including Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. This will have your full credit history, and they will give you your credit score.

If the person decides to keep the membership, they are allowed access to other services provided by the company. The person can view their credit at any time. They can set alerts concerning their credit report such as if any company views their credit report, they can be notified by email. Identity theft protection is a common feature.

What Exactly Do you Get in a Free Credit Report ?

Mike Clover asked:

In this article we will discuss the misconception of free credit reports. There are lots of advertisements out there saying get your free credit report. But what exactly does a free credit report come with? I have personally seen about 3 different types of credit reports being advertised out there.

The first type of credit report is the credit report where you only get a credit report from one of the bureaus. There are 3 bureaus, and they are Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian. Typically the offer includes a report only from one of these bureaus. You might ask yourself how does this help me, and the answer is it does not help very much. The reason is since there are 3 bureaus, and they all report somewhat different information; you might want to get a credit report from all three bureaus. This is called a tri-merge, or a 3-1 credit report. In other words you get one report with all three bureaus and what they are currently reporting about you in regards to loans outstanding with your creditors.

The second type of credit report is the 3-1 credit report with credit score. This is somewhat better; you get all three bureaus reporting your information along with only one of the agencies giving a score. Well you might ask yourself again, what is the advantage and disadvantages of this type of credit report? Since there are 3 bureaus reporting your credit, it would only make sense to get all 3 scores since that is what most lenders look at. Mortgage companies pull your 3-1 credit report with all three scores and typically use the middle score for qualifying purposes. If this is the industry standard in the qualifying process, shouldn?t you see the same report? I would have to say yes.

The third type of credit report is the 3-1 credit report with all 3 scores. This is the best type of credit report, because it is what lenders look at. Most people out there getting a free copy of there credit reports are not really sure what they are getting. Annualcreditreport.com advertises that you are entitled to a free copy of your credit report once a year, but fail to mention you don?t get your scores. It is in your best interest to get your credit report with all 3 bureaus and all 3 scores, especially since this is what most creditors look at in the determining process for lending you money.

Here is the break down for credit scores and how they are classified for mortgage:

? 780-850 ? Low Risk

? 740-780 – Medium ?Low Risk

? 690-740- Medium Risk

? 620-690- Medium High Risk

? 620 and Below ? High Risk or ?Sub-Prime.?

With all of this being said, it obviously makes more sense to get your 3-1 credit report with all 3 credit scores. Especially since that is what creditors are looking at. When pulling a consumer credit report it does not affect your credit scores.

How to Get a Free Credit Report With The Best Companies

Emanuele Allenti asked:

Have you ever wondered how bad or good your credit score is? Most people have and now they have the ability to find out. If you want quick access to your credit score, then you should get yourself a free credit report. This is the easiest and the quickest way to obtain your credit score. A free credit report will let you check your credit score with ease; you just type in some of your information and you will be ready to start. A free credit report is what many people are using to see what their credit score is like, whether it’s good or bad: they are still seeing if it needs some repair done to it, or if they will get approved for a credit card or loan application. It is after all your information, so you should be entitled to see it.

Your free credit report can be done through many companies; just a simple search on the Internet will show you hundreds of companies willing to offer you a free credit report. After all we will all want to know how good or bad we have done with our credit scores and this is the best way to do it. A free credit report will not just let you see how good or bad you have been with your finances, but it will also give you a different view of yourself. You will see how banks and loan companies see you. Can you be trusted with finances? Your free credit report will let you know that. Being rejected for a loan or credit card is not a nice feeling, but if you know your credit score, then you will know if you can successfully apply for a loan with a different bank.

Equifax is one of the best credit report companies. Being able to obtain an Equifax free credit report was not always an easy thing to do. In fact, up until last year, only Western states were able to solicit an Equifax free credit report. But now all Americans have the opportunity to view their credit reports; and this has dramatically increased Equifax’s workload. The ruling to allow everyone the option of getting an Equifax free credit report every year was a big step to make. However, it seems to be working well and everyone is getting the chance to view his or her credit report free of charge.

Equifax, however, only has to give you one free credit report a year; and if you would like to receive another credit report, then you have to pay more money. It will usually cost about $3-$9, depending on where you live. The only exception to this rule is for those who have been denied either credit or a job or are on welfare or unemployed; in this case, you will be given another Equifax free credit report. But one option that really shows that these people care is that if your Equifax free credit report was inaccurate due to fraud, then they will send you another credit report free.

The Equifax free credit report is the best way to keep a yearly check on your credit score. You will be able to see what has happened in the year that has made it go down, or what has made it go up. It may seem weird to know that your every move is being taken down and written onto a piece of paper that you will read once a year. But that is what’s happening, and even though it may seem strange, there is nothing we can do to change it. But at least we will know why we keep getting rejected for credit cards.

Equifax Credit Report – Get Your Free Credit Report From Equifax!

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Equifax has been compiling credit reports since 1899. You can now get your own free credit report every year from Equifax. Your credit report is what banks, mortgage and credit card companies use when they are deciding whether to grant you credit. It is a record of every credit transaction you have ever made.

Until recently you had to pay to get your credit report. But now thanks to the FACT Act which was passed in 2003 every American can see their own credit report. Previously, only companies had access to this information. Now you can see for yourself the information on which lenders base their decisions.

Equifax is a global company with 4,600 employees in 13 countries. With $1.4 billion in revenue it has a proven track record in the field of credit reports.

All you have to do to get your free credit report is to go to the Equifax website. Follow the simple instructions and your report will appear on your computer. You can download it or print it.

You must establish your identity by providing some information such as date of birth, social security number, name and address. Equifax needs to verify who you are before it hands out this sensitive information. But the whole process only takes a few key strokes.

Once you’ve got your credit report you can check it against your own records. If there are any inaccuracies you can report them to Equifax. When you provide the documentary evidence that a mistake has been made you can have the report corrected.

Then lenders will get an accurate picture of your credit history. If you have been the victim of identity theft and someone has used your name to get credit then you can have those transactions removed from your report.

Any inaccuracies in the credit report may have been lowering your credit score. Lenders may have refused you credit because they thought you were a bad risk.

There are two other companies that compile credit reports. You can also get free credit reports from them. But Equifax is one of the giants of the industry and a company that is well trusted by lenders. Equifax has been providing credit reports for over a century. So take advantage of the FACT Act and get your free credit report from Equifax today. Your credit score need no longer be a mystery to you.
