Christopher Luck asked:

According to an amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you can obtain a free credit report on yourself for free one time every year. However, just like with any new law or service, there are people out there looking to take advantage of you. So be aware of what you see when looking for your credit report; not every service claiming to offer you a free credit report is actually offering one.

To get your free credit report, you really only need to go to the annual credit report website. If you go to the Federal Trade Commission’s website, you will find all the information you really need to get your free credit report. You only need your name, social security number, date of birth, and address to get the free report. As easy as it is, there are still many companies out there who want to get the business of people like you who are seeking their free credit report.

One way these companies take advantage of people is by establishing a web address that is very similar to the legitimate government websites for obtaining a free credit report. They will harvest your social security number, address, and other personal information under the claim that you will get a free credit report. Remember, you can get one by going through the Federal Trade Commission. Be aware that you should never have to supply a credit card number or telephone number to obtain your free credit report. Your address, name, social security number, and date of birth are all you need.

You should never respond to an email to get your free credit report. Remember that that getting the report is a right you have. Some companies, in an effort to get your personal information, will send spam emails advertising access to your free credit report. These companies are usually just Phishing for your personal information. Never respond to emails to get your credit report. Instead, the information is easy to obtain through the proper government channels that are readily available to you.

Congress has given you the right to obtain a free credit report on yourself once every year. The government has given you access to the free report through the Federal Trade Commission website so that you do not have to worry. You will get emails, see on line advertising, and even get pop up ads that advertise free credit reports. Keep in mind, though, that many of these companies are not interested in getting you your report as much as they are getting a hold of your information. There is no reason to use these companies, legitimate or not, to obtain your free credit report when you can do it through the Federal Trade Commission. Your information is vital to your financial well being and in the wrong hands could do a lot of damage to your credit. In order to avoid these pitfalls, the best thing to do to get your free credit report is to go through the government.

Anthony

Dave Faulkner asked:

Did you inquire about your free credit reports lately? If not, the time is right to go to Annual Credit Report and answer a few personal questions that only you can answer and receive your report within hours. The free instance credit reports show your entire credit history dating as far back to when you had your first loan or credit card.

Because your credit report is ever changing, you can request a copy annually for inspection of the confidential records. You will find out who as been paid off, reported slow payment and how much credit you currently have used and any new applications filed. This helps the consumer keep track of credit history while having peace of mind that you are the only one using your identity.

The annual free credit report lists all your current and closed accounts. The report tells whether you paid on time or at a slower rate than expected by the creditors. Because the free instant credit reports are provided as a service, there are no fees associated with receiving your annual free credit report. Of you require your credit score; you may have to pay a small fee for this information.

Understanding your free credit reports requires a little reading, everything comes with an explanation and the layout makes reading and understanding the credit report easy. Once you look at your credit history, you will see your name, any variations of your name you may have used, whether you are married or divorced along with past and present employers and residences.

The free instant credit reports allows you to make any corrections if you find incorrect information that may be affecting your denial of further credit, cheaper interest rates and even a job. If you find inconsistencies in your credit report, right a letter to the credit agency that reports the wrong information and supply documentation to get the details corrected.

Because you receive three separate credit reports, one from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion you need to look at each report to find mistakes or inconsistent reporting. Each agency might report something that the other one does not. Therefore, looking at all three reports for correct information requires asking for all three reports from Annual Credit Reports.

Your free credit reports might not seem important to you right now, but if you ever try to land that great paying job, get the good insurance rate that your neighbor has or even get a credit card or loan, you need to know what your credit report says about you. You may find yourself being rejected because of incorrect information or even accurate information that you never new existed. Get your credit report today.

Clarence

Lyn Collier asked:

You don’t have to sign up for a trial membership of a credit protection service to get free copies of your credit reports. There a few one-stop websites where you can order credit reports from all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. It’s easy. One site, Annual Credit Report, is even recommended by Consumer advocate Clark Howard as well as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service.

By the way, your “credit report” is not the same thing as your “credit score.” The reports will give your credit activity only – not your FICO score. The FICO score is a number that is generated using info from all three agencies. It is a product of Fair Isaac Credit Org. (FICO) and must be purchased – $15.95

When you get to the site and start clicking around to request your free report, a few things might concern you. The main thing…and it is kind of unavoidable is the request for you to enter your Social Security number. If you have strong reservations about entering your SS number online, you can just skip the rest of the article and look up the 800 number and do the transaction on the phone. But either way, you will to have to provide your social security number.

Back to the online request. At some point during your online request for a free credit report , each bureau will try to sell you their products. Stay focused.

Here is the protocol for Experian for example: (and they are all pretty much alike so I will spare you the details on the other 2)

Step 1 on the Experian site will offer to sell you your Experian credit score for $5.95. Each bureau assigns a score, but their scores do not represent your FICO score.The FICO score is the one that most creditors use. I don’t recommend buying a credit score from anyone other than FICO. it’s the only one that counts. When asked if you want to purchase your “Experian” score, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “No thanks, I just want my free annual credit report.”

You will cruise through the steps pretty quickly. The only time you might have a problem is if you don’t answer the identification verification questions correctly. If you answer incorrectly you will be given a toll-free number to call where your i.d. can be verified manually.

Once you are done on the Experian site, you will be prompted to return to the Annual Credit Report site and continue with the other credit bureaus.

All the sites will walk you through the same process offering to sell you their products along the way. Remember, your goal is to get free credit reports, not buy stuff. Follow the prompts and you will instantly get your three credit reports free of charge.

Pedro

Tristan Dunston asked:

Consumers in the US, UK and Australia can all get their hands on a free copy of their credit report to do a credit check on themselves. The systems in each country are different, and this article explains how consumers can go about getting a free credit report if they live in one of these countries.

In the United States:

Consumers have had the legal right to a free copy of their credit report, annually, for a number of years now. The Fair Credit Reporting Act granted consumers a free credit report from each of the three US credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and Transunion.

There is only one authorized website in the US from which American consumers can obtain their free report under their legal entitlement, and that is annualcreditreport. There is also a free toll number, 1-877-322-8228 where US citizen’s can order their annual credit report. A report can also be ordered by filling out the Request Form and posting it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, PO Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Online, the service is instant, but security questions will be asked to verify identity. By telephone and post, it takes about 15 days for a credit report to arrive, but it may take longer if the agency needs to verify an identity.

The Federal Trade Commission, which protects US consumers, has warned people to be on the look out for what it calls ‘impostor’ sites. At one point it was estimated there were more than one hundred such websites in existence, some of which included domains that used misspellings of the authorized free credit report website.

There are other online services offering free credit reports, using subscription free trial period schemes. With these credit report services consumers need to be aware that if they fail to cancel the subscription within the free trial period they are likely to have their plastic charged. The trial period schemes usually require consumers to cancel the subscription within the trial period, usually 30 days, or the company may start to charge a fee.

Also, in the United States, consumers can get a free credit report if they have been turned down for credit, insurance or employment and they apply within 60 days of receiving notice from the company involved. The unemployed who are looking for work, those on welfare and people whose reports are inaccurate, because of fraud, can all get a free credit check.

In the UK:

There is not a legal right for consumers to a free credit report from the credit reference agencies in the UK, unlike the US. But you can go directly to the websites of the three credit reference agencies, Callcredit, Equifax and Experian to get one without having to pay a fee. All offer a free trial subscription service that provides a free credit report as part of the free trial. To avoid incurring a charge, the consumer must remember to cancel the subscription with the credit reference agency within the free trial period, usually 30 days. Failure to do so may lead to the agency charging fees.

One website in the UK, annualcreditreport.co.uk, provides UK consumers with free yearly access to their credit report from one of the three credit reference agencies. This service doesn’t require people to provide their credit card details to get a free credit report.

While there is not a legal right for consumers to a free credit report in the UK, there is a right under Data Protection laws for consumers to get a credit report for

Ara Rubyan asked:

Here are some frequently asked questions — and their answers — about getting your credit score free:

Q: Why would I a free copy of my credit score?

A: It contains a summary of information that could determine whether or not you can get a loan — and how much that loan will cost you in interest charges.

That said, you want a copy of your credit score to:

* Be certain the information is accurate.

You want accurate, up to date credit information going to the mortgage company before you buy a house, and/or to the auto finance company before you buy a car. If you are buying insurance they will look at your credit report. If you are applying for a job, they may also look at your credit score. A lot is riding on this! Make sure the credit information is current and complete.

* Stop identity theft.

It is important now, more than ever, that you do everything you can to stop someone from using your name, Social Security number, or your credit card number in order to commit fraud. How would you feel if someone used your name social security number to open a new credit card account in your name — and then charge hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in purchases? If they do this, you can be certain they have no intention of paying the bill. So the delinquent account will be reported on your credit report. Check your credit report to see if there are any credit card or loan accounts that you don’t remember opening.

Q: How do I get my free credit score?

A: There are three national credit reporting agencies that cooperate in a program to give you a free credit score once a year.

* Equifax

* Experian

* TransUnion

And there several ways to get that information:

* A central website

Visit http://www.annualcreditreport.com,

* A toll-free telephone number

Call 1-877-322-8228

* Via a mailing address

You’ll need to complete a form called “The Annual Credit Report Request Form.” Once you’ve done that, you will mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.

You can you can get a copy of the form from the Federal Trade Commission website: ftc.gov

You’re allowed to order one free credit score from each of these nationwide consumer reporting companies in a twelve month period. You can do it all at the same time or if it is more convenient, you can do them one at a time. But don’t contact these three companies directly. They will only provide your annual free credit score through one of these three methods.

Q: What do I need to submit when I order my free credit score?

A: You will need to provide the following information:

* Your name

* Address

* Social Security number

* Date of birth

If you have moved in the last two years, you may have to provide your previous address.

They’ll ask you for some information that is unique to you and your financial history. For example, they may ask you to tell them the amount of your monthly mortgage payment.

Q: How long does it take?

A: If you request your report online, they’ll begin processing it right away. If you order it by phone, it may take as long as 15 business days. If you order it by mail, it will be mailed to you within a similar length of time.

Dawn
